“They followed the buffaloes and their babies along the trail heading into the woods.” I was telling my son about the history of the bovines, specifically American Buffaloes, for an assignment he had for school.
“No honey, they are not bulls. Bulls are the male version of the un-castrated bovine. A cow is the female version of the bovine. An ox is the male version of the castrated male. The American Buffalo, though also a bovine, is also called American Bison.
“Mom, I am confused. It sounds like bulls, cows and oxen are all from the same species. The Buffalo and Bison are interchangeable.”
“You don’t sound confused at all. What is it you are confused about?”
“What does castrated mean?”
“Google it and finish your homework. I need a glass of wine.”
